Tutor unhappy with criteria for selecting outstanding teachers

A Tutor at the Kumasi Anglican Senior High School, Hamidu Seidu, has suggested that each best teacher in the region be rewarded with a house. 

According to him, the current system where only the best teacher out of the more than 300,000 teachers from the basic to the Senior High level who are rewarded is not fair as the hard work of most teachers are not recognized. 

Speaking in an interview on the Best Teachers Awards ceremony, Mr Seidu said though he has nothing negative about the programme, his observation is that it is not fairly representative enough of teachers. 

He said based on the current system, it is only very few teachers who can benefit from the award of a house while several hundreds of hardworking teachers would be struggling to get a decent accommodation during their life time. 

Mr Seidu who has been in the teaching profession for over two decades was also not happy with the criteria for the selection of outstanding teachers. 

He said for the past two years information about the awards ceremony does not get to all the teachers some of whom may qualify to contest for awards.

Mr Seidu noted that the annual event is gradually losing credibility because of the way it is handled from registration, the general interview to the final selection of awardees. 

He said teachers who hold the success of the nation deserves more and pleaded that the awards are fairly spread to the basic level where the teachers find it extremely difficult to bring the children up.
