Journalists urged to promote peace and democracy

Journalists have been advised to use their profession to promote peace and democracy, rather than using defamatory words in their reportage which can spark off conflict in the country.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Antwi Boasiako Sekyere, who gave the advice at a press soiree in Koforidua, noted that Ghana is a democratic country guided by rules and regulations.

As such the citizenry must be law abiding so as to promote national development.

He said his office will roll out a development policy that will inure to the benefit of the people in the region and the country at large, adding that, transparency and accountability will be his hallmark.

Mr Sekyere said Ghana is endowed with natural resources but how to fully utilize them to the benefit of the people is the problem.

Ghana, he said, is one of the countries that has a workable decentralisation policy in the world and called on the media to partner his office to bring the necessary development programmes in the region to bear fruits.

In an open forum, the Eastern Regional Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association, Maxwell Kudekor, suggested to the Minister to introduce “Meet The Press” programme to discuss issues of regional and national interest.

He also appealed to the Minister to provide the GJA with an office to enhance efficient service delivery.
