Pope Francis fires commander of Swiss Guards Pope Francis has removed the commander of the Swiss Guards, due to alleged strict authoritarian style of the officer which the pontiff is unhappy about. The news that Daniel Anrig would not be continuing as commander was published in the Vatican's daily newspaper. One Swiss Guard described the dismissal as the end of a dictatorship. Mr Anrig will leave the Vatican after Christmas at the end of an eight-year stint, and be replaced by his deputy. No official reason has been given for the dismissal. BBC
