Drivers cautioned against indiscipline during Christmas

The Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah has asked motorists especially drivers to obey road regulations and exercise patience at all times from now through the yuletide to ensure free flow of traffic and avoid preventable accidents.

Speaking to Radio Ghana on what could be done to reduce traffic during the rush hours, Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said the IGP has directed that other trained traffic wardens should support the Police MTTD personnel to fast-track traffic flow during the season.

On the increasing use of mobile phone while driving by all manner of persons, Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said the situation is becoming alarming.

According to her, the only thing the Police can do now is to enforce the legislation on the use of mobile phone to prevent accidents.

Reacting to this concern, the Director-General of Police MTTD, DCOP Angwubutoge Awuni expressed surprise that drivers using mobile phones are not being arrested and prosecuted. 

DCOP Awuni emphasized that the MTTD Commanders have no option than to arrest those flouting the law.

The Director-General in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, DCOP Angwubutoge Awuni, has proposed three options to manage the overwhelming traffic during the rush hours as the Christmas holidays approach.

He told Radio Ghana that very soon, a mass rapid transit transport system will be introduced on the Ofankor-Kasoa road to ease traffic. 

He also said the Police will intensify its role to ensure free flow of traffic.

He looked at the current traffic challenges and asked those who deploy two –three vehicles on the road to advise themselves.
