Parliament calls for empowerment of institutions that fight corruption
 

Parliament has made a case for the empowerment of institutions
that fight corruption. 

It says Auditor General and the Public Accounts Committee need to be finally resourced to carry out their mandates of unravelling corrupt practices in public institutions. 

In a statement to highlight world anti corruption day, the MP for Shai Osudoku, David Tetteh-Assumeng said the Attorney General must also be tough in prosecuting those found culpable of corrupt offences. 

He said fighting corruption must be done on a non political basis in freeing society of the canker.

parliament has approved the budget for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for next year. 

The Ministry will receive two hundred and 91 million Ghana Cedis for its work as well as that of the MMDAs.

Corruption has proven to be a bane to development in society. It includes acts of embezzlement, bribery, extortion, nepotism, patronage and embezzlement.  

In his statement, the MP for Shai Osudoku, David Tetteh-Assumeng said Ghana’s standing on the global perception index on corruption is not impressive thus the need for all to get involve in solving the problem.

The Deputy Minority leader, Dominic Nitiwul  said it is worrying the
level at which people who embezzle large sums of money don’t get
prosecuted while others who steal small amounts get convicted. He
expressed worry at the delay in prosecuting cases at the special
financial court set up by the chief Justice.

The Deputy Majority Leader Alfred Agbesi said the institutionalization
of the day by the UN tells of the endemic nature of the practice. He
said in the case of Ghana, the lax nature of law enforcement is a
contributory factor to its existence.
           
The Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah- Bonsu said the unstable nature of the economies of third world countries make corruption thrive.

He said a major way of stemming corruption is adhering strictly to the
practice of assert declaration
