Mine Workers Union concerned about impact of erratic power supply on job security Several companies in the Mining sector in Ghana have laid off their workers and a number of them are contemplating downsizing due to erratic power supply and fallen gold prices on the world market. As a result, most companies in the sector have resorted to hiring casual labour and outsourcing contracts as means of engagement. This came to light at the opening of a two day strategic National Executive Committee meeting of the Ghana Mine workers Union in Accra. The meeting will adopt strategies to chart the way forward in the prevailing circumstances. The National chairman of the Union, Mensah Ackuaku Gyakari in his opening statement recounted the experience of Anglogold Ashanti which laid off about 4,000 of its workers and Newmont Ghana Limited which is about embarking on a similar exercise. He described 2014 as a disastrous year for the union. GBC
