National Security declares KIA land area security zone


The National Security Council Secretariat says it has come to its notice that the activities of private developers are putting a lot of pressure on Kotoka International Airport and land close to installations at the airport.

In a statement the Secretariat said the trend has so far caused massive encroachment on the airport environment posing a serious threat to flight operations, creating hazards such as bird strikes and stray animals on the runway.

It says a Lands Commission public notice in 1998 aimed at halting all further developments in order to promote the airport's land use objectives and safety and security of aviation operations have been disregarded by private developers resulting in serious hazards in airport operations.

It says to prevent further encroachment; the boundaries of the Kotoka International Airport have been redefined so that non-conforming development and other unauthorised activities are curtailed.

The statement said with immediate effect the Airport land area has been declared a Security Zone.

The statement concluded that any interested party who is in doubt as to whether his or her development falls within the area may call at the Lands Commission for clarification before any new or further development is undertaken.
