NHIA Proposes Upward Adjustment In Payment Of Levy

The National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, is proposing an increase in its levy to cater for the huge expenses in running the scheme. 

The Authority is proposing an increase in the tax percentage. It also wants part of the oil revenue as well as 25 percentage of the communications tax. 

Its Communications Director, Selorm Adornu, said the current levy is not able to cater for services provided by the scheme. 

He said at the current structure of the scheme, only 30 percent pay levy with the remaining 70 being mainly pregnant women, children and the aged exempted from paying levy. This makes the scheme unsustainable. 

Mr.  Adornu noted that the monies released by the Ministry of Finance will not be enough to settle the debt owed service providers. 

On capitation, Mr. Adornu said it will be extended to the Volta, Upper East and Upper West Regions this year. 

An announcement to this effect would be made by the end of April.

He said the NHIA will by the end of the year complete, the biometric registration in the four remaining regions. 

These are Volta, Western, Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions.
