Accra High Court Acquits Alfred Agbesi Woyome On Charges Of Causing Financial Loss To The State

Businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome has been acquitted and discharged of both counts of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretences. 

The judge, Justice Ajet-Nasam, said Woyome was paid the controversial judgement debt on the orders of a court of competent jurisdiction. 

He lashed out at the state prosecutors for doing a poor job and failing to call key witnesses to support their claims. 

Three other alleged accomplices of Woyome were acquitted and discharged at the onset of the trial in 2012. 

Thursday’s ruling means Woyome can walk a free man except that he has to refund all the monies paid him as ordered early on by the Supreme Court. 

One of the Lawyers for Mr Woyome, Musah Ahmed says the ruling is an indication of his client’s innocence which was evident right from the beginning of the case. 

Meanwhile, the ruling NDC says it has been vindicated in the judgment debt saga involving Alfred Woyome. 

A member of the NDC legal team, David Annan said the party had always been convinced that Mr Woyome is not guilty of any of the charges brought before the court. 

Mr Annan told Radio Ghana that the NDC was associated with the Woyome saga especially when the opposition used it as a political weapon. 

In a related development, some members of Parliament have welcomed the ruling by the Accra High Court in businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome judgement saga. 

While some believe the ruling is a further attestation that the Rule of Law is upheld in the country, others are of the view that Government still has a window of appeal if it is not satisfied with the verdict. 

In an interview with Radio Ghana’s Parliamentary Correspondent Dominic Hlordzi, the MP for North Dayi George Loh said Ghanaians should accept the decision of the court. 

The Member for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh said it is early days yet to come to the conclusion that the case has been brought to a closure.

The MP for Ningo-Prampram, E.T Mensah said it is unfortunate that the Woyome case has been politicized. 

Following the ruling in the Woyome case, Radio Ghana sampled views of some members of the public on the final verdict. 

Most of them think the ruling must be accepted by all.
