MP’s Appeal To Ghanaians To Preserve Water Bodies As World Marks Water Day


MPs have appealed to Ghanaians to make the preservation of water bodies a priority as the world marks World Water Day.
 
The Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee, David Tetteh Assumeng championed this cause in a statement to commemorate the day. He said water is essential for sustaining life thus the careless exploitation of water bodies has become the major threat to water sustainability.
 
He said the conscious effort of protecting water bodies is therefore imperative in making safe drinking water more available.
 
A report by Parliamentary correspondents Dominic Hlordzi and Augustus Acquaye  say in 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the day to celebrate the world’s water.
 
It is a day to draw attention to members of the global population who suffer from water related issues. Each year has a different focus with the 2015 celebrations zooming in on water for sustainable development. 

The Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee, David Tetteh Assumeng said when people have access to clean drinking water it will improve all facets of life.

The MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh said the only way out in ensuring water sustainability is the enforcement of laws. He said many laws fashioned to protect are being overlooked and this has led to the destruction of nature.

The MP for Pusiga, Laadi Ayi Ayamba was concerned that the country has not been prudent in safeguarding water sources.

According to the Water Resources Commission, the Planning Committee for the National Celebration of World Water Day will hold a Symposium on Sunday at the Trade Fair Centre Auditorium.
