Ghana lauded for policies to alleviate sufferings of vulnerable

Ghana has been applauded for the pro-poor policies it has put in place to alleviate the sufferings of the vulnerable.

However more effort and commitment are needed from government in the implementation of these policies.

These comments were made by the Acting Country Director of CARE International, Ghana, Christine Achieng during a media launch of CARE Ghana's 20th anniversary in Accra.

She said though Ghana has been declared a lower middle income country, there is still poverty. This is why CARE is committed to seeing Ghana without poverty and where social injustice will be overcome.

The Chairman of the Board of CARE Denmark, Christian Nissen said there is the need to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich, saying there is a difference between passing resolutions and the real life situation on the ground. He said Ghana has the expertise and a fast growing economy that can help in the development process.

Care International, one of the leading humanitarian agencies started operations in Ghana in 1994. With an initial of three districts, it now operates in 56 districts across the country. Sectors covered by CARE International include health, agriculture, food security and nutrition as well as natural resource governance.

Activities lined up for the celebrations include engagements with the media to raise awareness and bring to bare some achievements of CARE in Ghana among others.
