Togo`s President Faure Gnassingbe re-elected for third term

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe has won a third term in office following last weekend's election.  

Provisional results gave the incumbent about 58% of the total votes with his closest challenger Jean-Pierre Fabre hovering around 34%. 

The results however have to be confirmed by the Constitutional Court before they can be declared officially. 

The opposition has alleged widespread irregularities and has requested suspension of any declarations. President Mahama who chairs ECOWAS is in Togo trying to ensure that peace prevails. 

Faure, the son of former ruler, Gnassingbe Eyadema, assumed the presidency when his father died in 2005 after about 38 years in power. 

This means, father and son have controlled the West African country for half a century.
