Shortage of Doctors at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital


The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is currently attending to only specialised cases due to lack of Doctors.  

As a result, the hospital has since Monday May 4, been turning away patients who call at its Out Patient Department, OPD.  

Apart from specialised cases, emergency Out Patient cases and preparation of patients for the theatre are being attended to.  

One hundred and fifty House Officers who provide essential services at the OPD have completed their housemanship and left the hospital, leading to the suspension of services at the OPD.  

The PRO of the Hospital, Mustapha Salifu who confirmed this to the media said, the situation has led to the hospital scaling down its activities.  

According to him, files on new Out Patient cases are being assessed and rescheduled to when the hospital could run on its full schedule, adding that there are exceptions to new Out Patient emergency cases.

Meanwhile, Management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has announced that a new batch of House Officers will arrive at the hospital in two weeks. House officers are fresh doctors who have graduated from Medical School.  

They work under resident doctors and consultants who manage the out-patient departments and provide emergency care.

The expired tenure of the House Officers on May 4 means the hospital is 150 doctors short of health service providers.
