Cholera kills Burundi refugees as aid agencies struggle

Humanitarian agencies are struggling to cope with worsening medical conditions of thousands of Burundian refugees stranded on Kagunga Island in Tanzania.

A statement from UNICEF says that the cholera outbreak on the Island is alarming. 

At least 33 people have died, with 27 deaths believed to have been cholera related. 

The World Health Organization declared cholera a level one emergency in the region yesterday.  

More than 100 thousand people have crossed into Tanzania since political unrest began in Burundi last month.
