Bagre spillage destroy acres of farmlands


Several farms have been submerged as a result of the spillage from the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. Authorities in Burkina Faso earlier warned residents living around the White Volta Basin to vacate their place as they spill excess water from the Bagre Dam. 

The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, says it was only informed about the spillage on last week Monday. About ten people died after the spillage last year while some communities were cut off from the rest of the country. 

The Bawku West District NADMO Coordinator, Moses Adukpam, warned that people in communities likely to be affected to move out swiftly. 

He underscored the need for sensitization exercise in the area. Mr. Adukpam mentioned the communities they have sensitize them and appealed to government and benevolent organizations to come to their aid.

Many youths in the Bawku West District of the Upper East region are moving out of the place due to the disaster being caused by the Bagre Dam spillage. 

The Upper East Regional Minister James Zuugah Tiigah, when visited the affected communities in the area, cautioned them to desist from farming closer to the river. 

He said farmers should at least farm 50 metres away from the river. Mr. Zuugah called on them to plant trees along the banks 
 
The youth who were engaged in farming have had their farms submerged in water, which continues to flow from Burkina Faso. 

The District Chief Executive of the area, Simon Agbango told Media men that the youth have expressed despair at the economic conditions in the area and have begun migrating to the south to seek greener pastures. 

He has also given a strong indication that the area will soon be thrown into hunger if food is not sent immediately. 

The waters have destroyed several acres of farmland.
