Julian Bond, former NAACP chairman and activist, dies at 75

Noted civil rights activist Julian Bond has just passed away at the age of 75. Bond was a chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), developing a long track record of committed work to support the African American community.

According to The Southern Poverty Law Center, Bond died after a short illiness. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, the civil rights legend is best-known for his contributions to the black community during the 1960s civil rights movement. He is a graduate of Morehouse College, and was one of the co-founders of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

As the Communications Director for SNCC, Bond was often in the middle of much of the chaos that came to define the era in which African Americans fought bravely to secure various political rights. Bond passed away in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

After serving as chairman of the board, Bond declined the offer to run again in 2010. In his storied career, Bond also served in the Georgia state legislature and was a professor at American University and The University of Virgiania. He will be missed by all of us.
