President Mahama reiterates gov't commitment to the agriculture sector


President John Dramani Mahama has entreated farming communities in the country to consider agriculture as business to improve on their income rather than a cultural practice. 

He encouraged people in such communities to take advantage of the high demand for food crops and vegetables in the urban centers for their benefit. 

He reiterated his government’s commitment to ensure food security through the provision of subsidized agriculture implements for farmers. 

President Mahama made the remarks at Ziope in the Agortime Ziope District of the Volta Region during a grand durbar to mark their annual Agbleza Festival.

Agbleza (Farming Festival) is celebrated by the Chiefs and People of Agortime Traditional Area, a predominant farming community to mark the major harvesting season and to raise funds to develop the area. It is also used to create an awareness of the plight of poor farmers to all stakeholders in the field of agriculture. 

Some of the food crops and vegetables which were displayed include cassava, yam, plantain, tomatoes, okro and garden eggs. President Mahama commended the Chiefs and People of the area in their efforts towards self-help projects. 

He disclosed that plans are far advanced for the extension of potable water from the Adidome Water Plant to benefit the people of Adaklu and Agortime Ziope District. 

He indicated that the Youth Employment Agency will restart the youth in the agriculture module to recruit young people who are interested in agriculture production. 

The MP for the Area Juliana Azumah-Mensah urged her constituents to promote their Kente Industry and Agriculture Potentials to improve upon their livelihood. 

She noted that under her leadership school under trees have been eliminated and called on parents to invest in the education of their wards to ensure them a brighter future. 


Mrs. Azumah- Mensah also urged them to exercise their franchise by voting during the upcoming District Assembly Elections. 

The Paramount Chief of the Area who is also a member of the Council of State, Togbui Binah Lawluvi thanked the President for the provision of infrastructure in the area. 

Projects such as the Ziope-Akatsi link roads, the rehabilitation of the Keyime Irrigation Dam and a Community Day Senior High School he noted will contribute towards socio-economic development of his people. 

Presidents Mahama donated an amount of 10,000 Ghana Cedis towards the building of a two bedroom self-contained house for medical staff in the area.
