University enhances skills of small-scale miners

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) - Tarkwa, has trained small-scale miners in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality on the modern method of extracting gold from the land without destroying the environment.

Address a two-day training workshop for the miners in Tarkwa, Professor Richard Kwasi Amoakoh, the Head of Mineral Engineering at the University, said the training was a fulfillment of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and small-scale miners in the area.

The training, funded by the Australian Government at $ 60,000, is to improve their knowledge and understanding in gold extraction and environmental safety.

Prof Amoakoh noted that the training would be extended to nine other districts across the country where mining was active.

He advised the miners to take the lessons learnt at the workshop seriously to enhance efficiency in their work.  

He reminded the miners to always find scientific solutions to the challenges in their operations instead of attributing it to superstition.

Mr Collins Osei Kusi, the National President of Small-Scale Miners Association, commended the University for the initiative and urged the miners to unite their front and co-exist peacefully for accelerated development.
