Ghana commemorates Elder Abuse Awareness Day

HelpAge Ghana has called on government to speed up processes towards the drafting of the National Aged Bill to improve the well-being of older persons including the protection and promotion of their rights. 

It also called for a National Council on ageing to coordinate the implementation of the National Ageing Policy which was approved by Cabinet in 2010. 

This is contained in a statement signed by the Administration and Media Coordinator of HelpAge Ghana, Ethel Boakye to commemorate Elder Abuse Awareness Day which is being marked June 15. 

It said government must not bow to international pressures to back down on its support to the Open Ended Working Group on Ageing but rather look for legal measures and instruments to improve it. 

It said as Elder Abuse Awareness Day is being marked Ghanaians should be mindful of the fact that older persons have rights like others in society.
