Nyantakyi Confirms Grant’s Stay For Afcon 2017

The GFA boss says the Black Stars coach will guide the team at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speculations about Avram Grant's immediate future as Ghana coach can now be put to rest following confirmation that the Israeli will lead the Black Stars to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi, Grant will be the man in charge as the West Africans hope to win the continental tournament for the fifth time.

The former Chelsea manager's future had been thrown in doubt following a run of poor results, the Black Stars having failed to claim a win in their last five games in all competitions.

''We have not discussed at any meeting to replace Avram Grant," Nyantakyi told members of the FA at its annual Congress on Monday.

"Maybe be it would be done in the future, but at the moment, our focus is on the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Gabon.

''We have to plan well and ensure we present the best of players available.

"I said at Wafu recently that Ghana is going for the 2017 Afcon because Nigeria won it in 2013, while Ivory Coast did it in 2015.

"2017 is the turn of Ghana because these are the three power houses in West African football.''

Grant began his reign as Ghana boss in December 2014, leading the team to the final of the 2015 Afcon two months later.

The Black Star’s endeavour to reach the 2018 World Cup has, however, got off to a poor start after picking just a point in two matches.

Ghana, who last won the Afcon in 1982, will play at the 2017 tournament in Group E, alongside Egypt, Mali and Uganda.
