Investigations underway into police killing at Wechiau in Wa

Police in Wa have launched investigations into the killing of a policeman at Wechiau, the district capital of Wa West in the Upper West Region. 

Constable Edmond Kwakuvi Hukpoti forty-one was shot dead by people suspected to be armed robbers on his way to duty post. 

Narrating the incident to Radio Ghana’s Upper West Regional Correspondent Sualah Abdul-wahab at Wa, the Regional Crime Officer Superintendent Alhaji Huseini Awinaba said constable Hukpoti who was on his way to the residence of the DCE in the night attempted stopping two motorbike riders at top speed. 

Superintendent Awinaba said the deceased went to where the motorbikes were left by the road side in bush after the suspects created the impression that they had fallen only for them to fire gun shots at the policeman. 

The friend of the policeman who was taking him to the DCE residence on a motorbike rushed back to report to the police for re-enforcement. 

However, when the colleagues arrived at the scene the policeman was found in poll of blood. 

A search conducted by the police team found a bag containing about four hundred live AK47 ammunition in addition to fifteen empty shells of AK47 ammunition. 

The Regional Crime Officer could not tell whether the police man also fired gun shots back before being killed. 

He however, suspected the culprits either would have committed a crime in neighbouring Burkina Faso or were running away or they were coming into Ghana to commit a crime. 

Superintendent Awinaba appealed to people in the district and the region at large to report any person or people with suspicious bahaviour to the nearest police station for immediate action. 

The body of Constable Edmond Kwakuvi Hukpoti has since been deposited at the Regional Hospital at Wa. 

It will be taken to the Police Hospital in Accra for autopsy. 

Meanwhile, investigations to unravel in incident have started.
