Ghana Health Service worried over disturbing Doctor to patient ratio in Upper East Region

The doctor to patient ratio situation in the Upper East Region is dire as records indicate the current doctor to patient ratio is one is to thirty thousand, three hundred and eighty four compared to the national ratio of one is to one thousand, three hundred.
 
According to the Regional Health Directorate, efforts to improve the situation resulted in the engagement of three doctors from the Cuban Medical Brigade, three Ghanaian doctors and an obstetrician.
 
The three Ghanaian doctors are currently engaged at the Bongo, Zebilla and Sandema districts hospitals. 

All district hospitals in the Upper East Region have a minimum of two doctors.
 
However, the situation is very serious as more doctors are needed, especially at the Regional hospital.
 
Currently, two surgeons who are also doctors are away pursuing their fellowships.
 
The issue of doctor to patient ratio was revealed at this year’s annual performance review meeting of the Ghana Health Service in the Upper East region.

This year’s performance review meeting was under the theme "Harnessing human resources for effective leadership and service delivery with focus on newborn care and sub-district health". 

It included various presentations by health training institutions from across the region including the Navrongo Community Health institution and the Zuarungu Health Assistants School.
