Ghana yet to ratify treaty on GMOs – MOFA

The Chief Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in charge of Crops, Asante Krobia, says the importation of GMO seeds has been banned and it is illegal for anybody to import such seeds into the country.
 
Explaining why genetically modified seeds are on the market,  Mr. Krobia  said Ghana has not ratified the treaty on GMOs, adding that three years ago, an agency was set up to certify the importation of seeds for farmers. 

The General Secretary of Food Sovereignty, Ofori Kofi Adjei says despite the official ban on GMOs, the products are found on the market.

Speaking to Radio Ghana on the farmer’s position on GMOs, Mr Adjei said there is the need for a clear cut structure and social fund to mitigate any negative impact on the use of GMOs.

He said Food Sovereignty is opposed to the use of GMOs because the nation has a seed producing Agency capable of producing enough seeds for the farmers.
