NRSC steps up road safety campaign to help prevent accidents during Easter


The tendency for drivers to engage in activities that could lead accidents in this Easter season is high. 

Some drivers engage in speeding while others over stretch themselves so as to make more money during the yuletide. 

To help prevent accidents during the period the National Road Safety Commission in collaboration with key other stakeholders in the transport industry has stepped up its campaign on the need for drivers and passengers to adhere strictly to the road traffic regulations at Wa in the Upper West Region. 

The Commission has held separate fora managers of transport organizations, drivers, mates and passengers at the lorry park and stressed the need for all to go by their role and responsibility. 

Other stakeholders were the MTTU of the Ghana Police Service and Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority, DVLA. 

The Regional Manager of NRSC Mohammed Abdul-samad the nation mostly records an increase in road crushes during Easter periods because many drivers violate road traffic regulations just to make more money. 

He asked drivers to desist from driving for four hours without a rest. 

He also appealed to drivers not to talk on phone while driving as that leads to divided attention. 

Mr. Abdul-samad entreated passengers not to put pressure on drivers to over speed because they want to reach their destinations early. 

The Upper West Regional PRO of the DVLA Sumaila Sinsau said passengers need to check the insurance status of commercial and private vehicles before bordering them. Drivers he indicated must also check the tyres of their vehicles, brakes, lights, water and sound of the engine before embarking on any trip. 

A representative of the MTTU Sergeant Kwabena Ababio said though accidents involving motor cycles in the region have reduced from thirty-six in the first quarter of last year to twenty-eight of the first quarter of this year number of deaths has gone up from fourteen in the same period last year to nineteen this year. 

Sergeant Ababio described the situation as worrying and called on key stakeholders to double their efforts in bringing the situation under control. 

The Commission also distributed materials on road safety to drivers, passengers and mates to update them on their roles and responsibilities.
