UN supports implementation of DRC political agreement

The top official at the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been meeting with political leaders to find ways to implement an agreement that paves the way for elections in the country.

UN Special Representative Maman Sambo Sidikou on Sunday received a delegation from opposition groups, according to a statement from the mission, MONUSCO.

He also will be meeting with other leaders and civil society in connection with the accord.

The agreement, signed on 31 December 2016, calls for elections to be held before the end of this year and a peaceful transition of power in its aftermath.

It was mediated by the Catholic Church in the country.

The MONUSCO statement underscored that there is "no alternative" to its full implementation "We must all work together to overcome the obstacles to the holding of credible elections by the end of 2017," the statement concluded.
