Upper East: Suspected Robbers and Accomplices in Police Grip

A joint operation by personnel of the Upper East Regional Police Command and the Prampram police has led to the arrest of five suspected armed robbers and their accomplices in Bolgatanga. 

The robbers who were smoked out from their hideouts are believed to be among syndicates that attacked an orphanage at Ningo Prampram late last year and succeeded in robbing victims of their belongings and subjecting inmate to physical abuse. 

It will be recalled that on November 20, 2017, report was made of a robbery incident that took place at an orphanage in Ningo Prampram, a suburb under Tema. 

The robbers who were in possession of pistols and machetes among other offensive weapons succeeded in robbing victims of six mobile phones and an unspecified amount of foreign and local currencies. 

Some inmates at the time of the incident were subjected to severe beatings. The robbers managed to escape before personnel of the Prampram police command when they got to the crime scene.  

Following police investigations, two of the suspected robbers were apprehended after being tracked and traced to circle in Accra where they attempted breaking into an iPhone which happens to be one of the stolen phones. 

It was however, established that someone brought the phones to be decoded and was traced to Bolgatanga.
 
On Sunday (January 7) personnel of the Criminal Investigation Department in Bolgatanga assisted two other officers from Prampram to arrest the other culprits at their hideouts in Bolgatanga.  

In the course of the arrest, three foreign pistols, one short gun and ammunitions were retrieved from them. 

They are Rufai Umoru a Nigerian aged 36, Otu Laryea,27, Stephen Botey,29 and Adongbire Asampana, wife of Mutaka Mohhammed, an escapee, who is believed to be the gang leader. Mutaka aged 29, was later arrested at the Bolga-Tamale bus terminal upon intelligence gathering. DCOP Redeemer Vincent Dedjo is the Upper East Regional Police Commander. 

According to DCOP Dedjo, Muntaka mentioned one Israel Valentine Edo, Nana Yaw popularly known as Pastor and Mike Osuji all Nigerians as accomplices who sought his assistance to rob a gold dealer. 

According to him, Muntaka led the police team to Kings and Queens Guest house at Bukere in Bolgatanga where they were arrested. 

Meanwhile, all the suspected robbers are in police custody assisting in investigations. 

DCOP also disclosed the arrest of a Rastaman cited in series of robbery attacks in Ashiaman and its environs.
