Police caution public against social media fraudsters

The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public to be vigilant against fraudsters who create/duplicate social media accounts of high profile personalities, public officials and politicians to dupe unsuspecting victims. 

The service said some fraudsters have taken advantage of social media to defraud unsuspecting victims of huge sums of money and valuables believing that they are dealing with persons with influence.

The Police in a statement signed by Director-General/Public Affairs, ACP David S. Eklu, on Tuesday said it is currently investigating a number of such reports, including a complaint lodged by the Director of Communications at the Office of the President; Mr Eugene Arhin who has been impersonated with the imposter assuring his victims of several rewards such as securing positions in government for them, once they part with varied sums of money.

“Police wants the public to take precautionary measures such as verifying websites, social media accounts, telephone numbers and the persons behind them before parting with money, valuable information and property,” the statement added.

“The police urge the public to promptly report to the nearest police station any fraudulent actions related to social media or otherwise for investigation,” it added.
