Agogo SHS in Yilo Krobo Needs Attention Classrooms which supposed to be a place for teaching and learning has now been converted to dormitories at Agogo Senior High School in the Yilo Krobo Municipality. The school Authorities have no option than to do that to have a place for the students to lay their heads after days’ work. This came light when Radio Ghana visited the school to acquaint with challenges facing the school. According to the Headmaster of the School, John Mensah Dzokoto, since the establishment of school 25 years ago, there has not been any dormitories to house the students. He said the students’ intake last year under the Free SHS policy has compounded the accommodation challenges making teaching and learning activities difficult in the school. The school with over 747 students population has only eight seater toilet facility. The teachers in the school have no option than to attend the same facility with the students. This, Mr. Dzokoto noted can create the atmosphere for sexual activities among the students. Other challenges facing the school are no dinning and assembly halls, Kitchen, inadequate classroom blocks and fence wall. He said the absence of fence wall has expose the school to thievery activities as they have been battling with them every day in the school. The Headmaster further stated that the one storey classroom block which was started 2010 to solve the classroom deficit problem has been left in white elephant. The authorities has no other means than to let the students attend classes in it making teaching difficult as the students have not being paying attention looking outside while tuition is going on. The students always got wet when there is a downpour. Mr. Dzokoto commended the government for the Free SHS policy as it will go a long way to reduce illiteracy rate in the country but was quick to add that the necessary infrastructure facilities would have been put in place before the take off and called on the government to speed up work on that to ensure its sustainability. He therefore appealed to organizations, Philanthropists and individuals who has education at heart to come to their aid to help solve their challenges to ensure effective teaching and learning.
