FDA disclaims skin lightening pills and tablets

The Food and Drugs Authority, FDA, has expressed worry about the use of skin lightening pills and tablets by some Ghanaians. 

The Head of Cosmetics and Household Chemicals of the FDA, Emmanuel Nkrumah, expressed the sentiment at a news conference in Takoradi. 

He said the FDA has not approved any of the tablets and pills currently circulating in the country. 

Mr. Nkrumah who described the practice as unfortunate said the use of these cosmetics tend to stop the production of Melanin which protects the black skin from direct contact with the sun. 

Bleaching he said, exposes victims to diseases such as diabetes, cancers, liver and kidney problems, body odour and hypertension. 

Mr Nkrumah said surveillance at the market shows that such tablets and pills are not on display, yet people end up getting them.
