NDC reprimands MP for Odododiodio for irresponsible comments

The NDC has distanced itself from claims that the party will release former MP for Chiana-Paga, Abuga Pele, after victory in the 2020 elections. 

Last Friday, An Accra High Court imposed a six year jail term on the former MP who was Coordinator of the National Youth Employment Programme for causing financial loss to the state. 

The NDC's disclaimer followed alleged comments by MP for Odododiodoo, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye that it will free Abuga Pele, if the party captures power in 2020. 

Speaking on GBC’s “Behind The News,” the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the claim by Mr Vanderpuye does not reflect the position of the party regarding the fight against corruption as well as the matter involving the conviction of  Abuga Pele in particular. 

He noted that investigation and prosecution of Abuga Pele was initiated by the NDC government as part of its strategy to fight corruption.

Mr. Aseidu Nketiah suggested public correction of Mr Vanderpuiye's comments is punishment enough.

A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko says it will be suicidal to politicise corruption since it is a major problem undermining the country's development. 

He said corruption must be tackled head-on to protect the country's coffers. 

In his contribution, the Executive Director of the Centre for Media Analysis, Dr. Messan Mawugbe said as unfortunate as Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye's comments may have been, they were made in a political context.
