Ghanaians losing trust in local governance system - CDD Afro barometer survey 

A recent Afrobarometer survey conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), reveals that majority of Ghanaians are losing trust in the local governance system.  

The survey indicates a decline in trust from 54% to 47% between 2005 and 2017. It also shows that majority believe the Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives (MMDCE's) are corrupt. A situation which needs a drastic change.  

Presenting the findings of the survey in Accra, a Research Officer at CDD-Ghana, Newton Norviewu said the survey which was conducted in every region of the country, showed that 69%  of the respondents endorsed government's plan to make the position of MMDCE's elective.  

51% of the respondents believe strongly that the appointment of local government officials must be scrapped so that they will rather be elected to inject more transparency and competition into those positions.  

Commenting on the findings, the Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey called for more of such surveys.  

He said after 30 years of local governance, there must be a change in the system to reflect development.
