President Akufo-Addo petitioned over attempts to add Chereponi district to proposed North East Region

The chief of Chereponi Jaminja Malba Yombu has petitioned President Akufo-Addo over attempts to add the Chereponi district to the proposed North East Region. 

The Chief explained that, as a traditional area, they take their authority from the overlord of Dagbon and wish to remain with him under the same Regional House of Chiefs. 

At a news Conference in Chereponi, the chief who spoke through his Secretary said they are not against the creation of the North East Region nor are they downplaying the long standing relations between them and Mamprusis. 

He emphasized however that, in the interest of peace and unity, they would  want to remain under the Overlord of Dagbon who they pay allegiance to. 

Some Chereponi youth pledged their support to the creation of the proposed North East Region during a visit to the region by the Commission of Enquiry into the Creation of New Regions. 

The chief of Chereponi explained that the youth acted on their own without consulting him.

Chief Jaminja however revealed that, he will gladly join the Eastern Corridor Region if the President decides to create a new region in the area, adding that, his traditional area will still be under the Overlord of Dagbon. 

Chereponi is a relatively young district with numerous developmental challenges including, poor road network, inadequate educational infrastructure and inadequate water supply. 

In a related development, the Dagbon Traditional Council has expressed concern over what it says are attempts to cede part of the Dagbon traditional area to become part of the proposed North East Region.

A statement from the Gbewaa Palace identified Chereponi in particular as the targeted district and cautioned government against such moves.

The statement signed by the Acting President of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Kampakuya Na Yakubu Abdulai Andani, said the Dagbon Traditional Council, which includes Chereponi, served noticed to government that its lands will remain under one single northern region. 

It said it is not against the creation of other regions; however no part of Dagbon will be ceded for that purpose.

He appealed to government to respect the wishes of the Traditional Council and keep Dagbon under one region.

Kampakuya Na added that it is possible to create new regions without sowing the seeds of conflict.
