Major Mahama: Defense Lawyer tells jury to be very attentive to the Prosecution and evaluate appropriately

Defense lawyers in the trial of the alleged murderers of Major Mahama have cautioned a seven member jury to be very attentive to the Prosecution and evaluate appropriately, the evidence which will be annexed in court. 

One of the lead counsels for the sixth and seventh accused persons, Augustines Obuor averted the jury to peruse the evidence adduced during trial, adding that the burden of proof lies on the Prosecution. He said the Prosecution must prove beyond all reasonable doubts, that the accused persons truly committed the crimes which have been levelled against each of them. Mr Obuor said the jury must not pay heed to "public prosecution. 

The prosecutor Evelyn Keelson submitted to the court that the state intends to bring fifteen prosecuting witnesses as well as a video that will be shown in court to prove the various roles each of the accused persons played in the death of Major Mahama. 

Presiding Judge, Justice Mariama Owusu had earlier ruled against the objection by a defense counsel Patrick Anim Addo, who was opposed to the prosecution reference to confession statements obtained from his clients during investigations. 

He said those statements were obtained improperly and that the jury will be prejudiced if the court allowed the prosecutor to make reference to the statements. However, the court ruled in favour of the state, on grounds that the submission advanced by lawyer Anim Addo, lacked legal basis. 

The case has been adjourned to the 10th of next month for hearing to commence.
